RE: Wagner Operas |

Vocally and musically the Met Tristan was wonderful. Visually it was horrible. We were robbed of the HD experience. I'm not sure who thought it was a good idea to have a singing postage stamp do the Liebestod while the majority of the screen was black. We would be better off staying at home listening to it on the radio. Wagnerian operas require singers with stamina. I would love to see this in the triangle but before attempting this we probably should stick to basics. I remember Triangle Opera several years ago putting on a Traviata in Memorial Auditorium that was absolutely terrible. The chorus was electronically amplified into the tinny sounding sound system of Memorial Auditorium - this is a good example of attempting something the company is not prepared to mount. I would hate to see this repeated in a poorly executed Wagnerian opera. Fletcher Theater works well for small intimate operas which fits the company well. Perhaps sticking with something the area (the facility and available singers) is suited for would be a boost for quality opera in the Triangle. |
