My first true opera experience was as a "super" in Fidelio. I might have seen an opera or two before that but they didn't register. So I thought that the best seat in the house might just be on stage in the middle of the action, and volunteered. And as an added benefit I got to play an imposing Spanish guard with a ponytail down to my waist . . . starting thinking it wasn't such a bad look . . .
Anyway, it's interesting to me that just a few years after volunteering to help I wound up in the business directing a great company. Life's pretty unpredictable.
