My first was the San diego Opera Company's Eugene Onegin. Only impressions remain, but the soft colors of winter suffused the set and I was very moved by the performances. I didn't understand the impact of music, theatre and art until I saw this production.

My first true opera experience was as a "super" in Fidelio. I might have seen an opera or two before that but they didn't register. So I thought that the best seat in the house might just be on stage in the middle of the action, and volunteered. And as an added benefit I got to play an imposing Spanish guard with a ponytail down to my waist . . . starting thinking it wasn't such a bad look . . . Anyway, it's interesting to me that just a few years after volunteering to help I wound up in the business directing a great company. Life's pretty unpredictable. Frank General Director

My first opera was on LP! I rushed home from school many days as a kid to sing along with Rise Stevens in "Carmen"...really I sang everyone's part attempting French because I didn't know I shouldn't! And didn't know a little girl could not sing Escamillo! Good to be a kid isn't it? Sure beat cleaning up my room! The first one I saw in person was Madama Butterfly done by Chicago Lyric. I was in high school and entranced and mystified by it. Many thanks to my choral director for taking all of us! Now, I find myself the chorus master for Madama Butterfly...for the second time in my life. No one could have told me then that I would have the opportunity to do this. It was CARMEN at the lovely Carolina Theater in Durham. At the time I knew nothing about opera. A friend who also knew nothing about the art form asked me if I was interested. I had no idea what to expect, but I was totally unprepared for what I experienced. I was blown away and I could feel then and there that a door to a whole new and exciting world had suddenly opened before me. I was immediately hooked. I can't even tell you who was in the cast, but it doesn't matter. They set me on the path I've been ever since, traveling around North Carolina, the USA and the world for opera. It's one of my greatest passions!
