Salome! It was terrific to see NCOC take on an opera as challenging as this one. It was a very dramatic, unnerving and enthralling experience, largely due to Kelly Cae Hogan. I'm a big Strauss fan and the venue at UNC Memorial Hall was ideal. Lucia comes in a close 2nd, again largely due to the leads, the young conductor driving the action from the pit, and the venue at Fletcher. Tosca was also excellent, especially the Te Deum scene (Scarpia is one of my favorite bass characters). I took an opera novice friend to this production and he was converted, rushed out and bought the Callas/Gobbi CD, and is now a regular in the audience at Seattle opera. I have to say that I'm not a big fan of amplified voices in Memorial Auditorium (but that's the subject of another thread, so I'll post comments there).

I would agree on the Salome. I was stunned with the quality of the singing and performance in what I consider to be a very difficult work. It worked well in Memorial-Chapel Hill, but I hated the parking & traffic situation with that venue. I also enjoyed the Tosca and the Boheme (with certain reservations about the tenor's wig). The Don Giovanni was well sung and played, but the production left me cold. Lucia is probably my 2nd favorite behind Salome, partly due to the venue at Fletcher and partly to our terrific soprano.

Oops! I forgot to mention the WONDERFUL Barber, which I enjoyed more than the Met's recent highly regarded staging. Barber is not my favorite opera, so my pleasure came from the singing, acting, and staging, not from a natural affinity for the work itself. Good work, OCNC!

Without doubt, the SALOME with Kelly Cae Hogan in Memorial Hall, Chapel Hill. Ms. Hogan was sensational, the production was visually interesting, and the singers were all unmiked, which is the way opera is meant to be performed. It really was a stunning production, one that was head and shoulders better than anything else I've seen at OCNC. I'm not even a big Stauss fan, and I found it thrilling. That production made me feel like OCNC had reached the "big leagues" and I hope to experience more such evenings here in the Triangle in the future!
